Although the federal government had committed to phasing out incandescent lighting starting in 2012, they have since backed away from this. The phase out will now start in 2014. This delay will cause an extra 13 megatonnes of GHG to enter the atmosphere. Although the government is delaying the phase-out of incandescent lighting, manufacturers and retailers who had over three years of notice are phasing them out. With only 10% of the electricity we pour into an incandescent bulb coming out as light, you and I can use good decision making to phase them out. Most of our incandescent lighting can be replaced by compact fluorescent or LED lighting. Both of which are improving greatly.
