F.4 Poison in Paradise

Video, 16:20 minutes.
This video examines critically the air and water pollution caused by
kraft mills in the pulp and paper industry. Violations of environmental
regulations by the industry are documented. The video outlines the health
risks associated with organochlorines, dioxin and furans in pulp mill effluent.
Included are interviews with spokespersons from unions, native communities
and environmental groups.

F.5 Rainforests - A Living Legend

Slides, and Audio cassette.
This kit includes three parts: (1) a resource book & teacher's guide
and (3) 42 slides with (3) a taped commentary. There are extensive units,
including Inside the rainforest, Rainforest in your home, What happens
when you chop down the trees, Forest people and Canadian connections. The
resource book is available in French, also.

This is a story and activity guide about two boys who build a fort under
an enormous tree in the forest. During their frequent visits to the
tree, the boys meet many of the other forest inhabitants and discover some
of the interrelationships that exist in a forest community. Activities
related to topics covered in each chapter are included.

This book is a story about the rainforest in the Carmanah Valley on
Vancouver Island. It explains how trail building has been invaluable
in creating public awareness of and access to the giants of the old-growth

A teaching unit developed to increase students' awareness, understanding
and appreciation of the boreal forest of northern Saskatchewan. The
unit was designed to help students discover the biological diversity and
interconnectedness of life within the forest ecosystem. Students
also explore the contributions a healthy forest makes to the earth's ecosphere.
Grades 5-6.

This is a question and answer trivia card game. Three main subjects
are outlined: forest products, forestry past and present and forest ecology.
There are three levels of difficulty. It must be noted that this
game seems to have an industry bias. Included with the deck of cards
is a map of the forest regions of Canada.

F.11 Focus on Forests Saskatchewan: An Activity Guide On Forests
and Forest Management
Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management, The Canadian Forest

A three part book dealing with: part 1- Discovering Trees, part 2- The
Forest Community and part 3- Forests In Our Lives. Each part has a large
number of activities available for children. Most activities take between
1-2 hours to complete or are observable for a number of weeks.
Grades K-8.
F.12 Into The Darkest Borneo
A Scott Lambert Film, 1990, Video 60 minutes
Follow Scott and his travel companion through the rain forests of Borneo
in search of the Penan, a ancient civilization that lives deep in the rain
forest. Learn about their culture, the rain forest and the threats they
face from logging interests in the area. The Penan are fighting for there
lives, but can they beat the billion dollar forest industry? The
Penan use the forest to survive not for profit.
Grades 6 and up.

Saving the planet is a video about some of the threats facing the planet
and some possible solutions. The film deals with such topics as nuclear
power and dumping, the oceans an there life, and the forests of the world.
Note some of the ideas are a little extreme.

F.13 Environmental Questions For Educators

The fact sheets include information on many topics including forests
of Canada and the tropical forests. The book itself is primarily a factual
book on forests, their importance, uses and management. The book explains
forestry concepts such as allowable cut and covers a wide range of forest
issues.

F.14 Our Common Ground
National Forest week, Canadian Forestry Service, 1994, Print
A small activity book to help students understand and appreciate our
forests. Included is a balance of information and thought provoking questions
to help children learn about the forest. Each activity has an objective,
curriculum, materials needed and location section.
Grades 5-10.
F.15 Focus on Forests Saskatchewan: An Activity Guide on Forests
and Forest Management
Natural Resources Canada and The Canadian Forestry Service
The book is split into four sections: The Living Tree, The Forest Ecosystem,
Forests: Effects of Human Activity, and Forests: Responsible Stewardship.
Each section has a number of activities and subheadings. Each subsection
has lesson information giving the activities appropriate grade level, subject,
duration, group size and more. The activities all have a purpose, materials,
methods and question section.
Grades 9-12.
F.19 Prince Albert National Park: On Top of The World With Anne Martin
World Life Video Productions in association with the discovery channel,
1996, Video 53 minutes
Looks at the national park and the Prince Albert model forest. The film
is very well done and the photography is excellent. The film shows the
different areas of the park and explains current research being done in
the park. Interviews with park wardens and scientists.

F.20 Boreal Forest Watch
1996 Teacher's Manual Boreal Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study
This program will include grade 9-12 teachers and their student in conducting
environmental monitoring. BFW will introduce students to the techniques
of field sampling; data collection, analysing, and reporting; and, to the
use of remote sensing data. Teachers and their students will visit field
sites either once or twice a year, set-up a fixed-area sampling plot, and
conduct BFW specified scientific measurement protocols. The student collected
date will build a long-term database for future global change studies.

1997 Video (50 minutes) Boreal Forest Watch.
Set with a jazzy and fun background, a young student narrates this video and introduces your students to the Boreal Forest Watch program. The video illustrates one of the main goals of the Boreal Forest Watch program, that the research done by the students will affect policy decisions. There is very detailed descriptions of how to size a pixel and how the students will gather their data, thorough explanation of forest terminology. The students will be shown how to gather the following info: diameter and height of tree, core sampling, number and types of trees, and basel area.

This comprehensive kit is designed to be integrated with a class visit
to the National Park in Prince Albert, SK. It discusses the intricate
and unique ecosystem which is present in the park, and uses many forms
of media to help the presentation along. (video, photos, CD ROM,
text) Suggestions are made for integration of this kit (both in a
classroom setting or at the park itself) with current curriculum of various
grades.

This teacher’s resource helps promote understanding of the role of fire as a natural force that needs to be respected and understood, rather than feared. The SFA has provided several activities that address the issue of fire ecology and fire management. Some of the activites are targeted at younger students while others will provide a challenge for older ones.
